Houchens Place Update:

  • The Spring 2023 home build will complete Phase 1 of the Houchens Place Community!
  • VDOT has taken ownership of Charney Way, the one road in the community. This has been quite a process and VDOT along with Fluvanna County has added guidance and support along the way.
  • The Garden Nursery in Fluvanna, donated over 50 trees and shrubs to homeowners in Houchens Place. What a “tree-mendous” gift this was! Should you purchase Spring plants from the Garden Nursery this year, give them one more “THANKS”!
  • Tammy Bowers, Fluvanna Habitat Board Member and Secretary, will be building a new entrance sign for Houchens Place this spring along with Doug Himberger, Board Member.

Spring Build Update:

We are trying something new this time – modular construction! Modular results in a permanent structure, NOT a mobile home. The modular company was able to meet our specifications in terms of rooms, baths, etc. The cost is coming in very similar to a stick built home, and maybe even less. The win-win is that we can continue to engage our volunteers as much will still be required inside and outside the home including the building of a front porch, sidewalks and a back deck. Following the build, we will determine if modular construction is a viable option for us as we complete the Houchens Place Community. Here are a few pictures of the new home:

New Website:

Like our new website?? HUGE thanks to Charlie Hall who donated his time and talents to make this possible!

Golf Tournament – April 22, 2023

We are gearing up for our one annual fundraiser, our golf tournament. Last year, the tournament brought us $17,000 that offset the cost of our Spring 2022 home. WOW!!

Grant Funding

We were granted funds by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission to pay for building materials for the next four homes we build. This funding will reduce the overall cost of home to our partner families by $20,000.

Did You Know?

We do not give away our homes – we sell them at cost to those families who have qualified for our program AND served the required 100+ “Sweat Equity” hours in financial literacy and homeownership classes. They are each very hard-working and must have an income stream to qualify.
